I’ve read a ton of them, but only a few have passed muster. With that in mind, here’s my all-star lineup – minus the very good but interminably mentioned On Writing Well by William Zinsser and The Elements of Style by William Strunk and E.B. White.Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Funny, practical and irreverent, Lamott hammers home a point that all writers grapple with – your first draft is going to be junk (though she uses a more descriptive term), so just get over it. As a writer, you should know how to properly write out or display actual numbers and when it is the right time to do so. Often times, people can easily get these confused. In this article, I will demonstrate the proper placement of both, numerals and numbers. Are you ready to learn? Here we go!

1.       The Difference Between a Numeral and a Number:
A numeral is the symbol used to express the number, while the number of something is an abstract concept. For instance, the number 4 can be expressed as the numerals “4,” “IV” or “four.” Similarly, the difference between a number and a numeral is like the difference between a person and what you write down their name as.
2.       Small numbers = spelling:
Whole numbers that is smaller than ten should always be spelled out, i.e. seven, eight, nine, ten, and 11. This rule is one that you can always count on to be true, while other number rules can vary person to person. The reason for spelling out small numbers is that is looks more professional. It is as simple as that.
3.       There are NO standards:
Yikes, right? Experts all over have a hard time coming to one conclusion about how to write out numbers and which ones are writer worthy. Some agree that all one-word numbers should be written out, while two-word numbers should be expressed with numerals. This implies that you should write “eleven” and “thirty” but not 44.
4.       The Comma:
Commas are really essential to breaking up numbers in content, i.e. “Alaska consumer 571,951 square miles” instead of “Alaska is 571951.” Also, where decimals are concerned, periods are used to break up those numbers. However, in other countries, the comma and period are opposite when using them in numeral expressions. According to International Systems of Units, (SI) they suggest adding a space between large numbers, i.e. $14 300,89. This part is left up to you to decide.
5.       Never begin with a Numeral:
Your sentences should never start with a numeral. Instead, if you were using “1,000 copies were sold today,” you would write, “Consumers bought 1,000 copies today.”
6.       Decades, Centuries, etc. should be spelled out:
Just as the tip suggests, eighteenth century and the nineties, should be spelled out!
7.       Recipes and Percentages:
With recipes and everyday writing, you should use digits. For example, “Add 2 cups of milk” or “5% of adults.” However, when it comes to formal writing structures, you need to spell out the percentage, i.e. “11 percent of adults,” (or “eleven percent of adults,” according to your preference as explained in tip three.)
8.       If you’re using an estimated or rounded number, spell it:
Numbers that are over a million and that are rounded up should be spelled out, like this: “Over 50 million people like bananas” instead of “Over 50,000,000 people like bananas.” Of course, if you’re using an exact number, you must spell it out.
9.       Number that are beside each other:
If you saw “9 14-year-olds,” that would look confusing, right? Instead, to avoid confusion, write “nine 14-year-olds.” A rule for this is to pick the number that has the smallest amount of letters.
10.   Consistency and Ordinal Numbers:
When writing, you should avoid expressing, “He was my 1st Pet” and instead use, “He was my first pet.”  You should also keep it consistent throughout your writing.

Reading and collecting books are terrific hobbies. Not only can these activities be enjoyed by people of all ages, they can help open one’s mind, stimulate the imagination, and educate like few other endeavors can. The only real drawback to being a bookworm is that books take up a lot of space and it can be easy to lose track of the titles you have in your collection – especially if you own a lot of books. However, it can be pretty easy to organize your collection and there are a few different ways to do it. Let’s take a look at them…. By color. This is a really fun way to get those volumes in order. Group certain colors together (i.e. blue, green, purple, etc.) and then organize the groups in a rainbow-like pattern. It’s visually striking and will add a lot of color to your living space. By size. Organize the books according to their size. From smallest to largest or largest to smallest, this is another visually interesting way to line up your collection. This has the added benefit of more or less grouping certain types of books together. For example, art history volumes tend to be large while genre-oriented novels (i.e. horror, romance) tend to be smaller, especially if they’re mass-market paperbacks. By subject and/or genre. If you have books on a wide variety of topics, it can be helpful to organize them by subject much like a library or bookstore. Group all the novels and short story and poetry collections together, then move on to memoirs, self-help tomes, women’s studies, horror, sci-fi, and so on. You could even use the Dewey Decimal System if you’re really committed. (Or if you just have a lot of time on your hands.) By author and then by title. This is probably the most common way to organize a book collection. It really helps to put the volumes in alphabetical order by last name and then title. After all, this task is for your benefit, so be sure to do it in such a way that it works for you. Finally, if your collection is overwhelming, you may want to think about cataloging it. Get a three-ring binder and some sheet protectors and make an inventory of all your volumes. This will help you keep track of your favorites (and not-so-favorites) so you’ll be able to tell which titles you’ve read and such. That way, you’ll never go to the bookstore and find yourself wondering, “Do I have this title or not?” It will also help you avoid purchasing multiple copies of the same title. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a book so appropriately named in my life. I’m sure I’ve never seen one embrace its subject with so much passion and conviction. The Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude: How to Find, Build and Keep a YES! Attitude for a Lifetime of SUCCESS (Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Books) is a colorul, positive, infectious, uplifting, enjoyable, motivating, delightful little book.Did I like it? I loved it. I loved everything about it.I had finished reading the stack of books on my desk – some were for reviewing on blogs, others were novels by favorite fiction authors (Dean Koontz, Agatha Christie). Since I always, always, always have to be in the middle of at least one book to feel content, I headed to my husband’s bookshelf, knowing he had gotten a few books lately. Even though his books are mostly about golfing, business, and sales (not the kind of sales I’m interested in), every now and then he’ll have one that matters to me. This gold little book caught my eye right off the bat, as did the tile on the side, “Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude.” It was love at first sight. Colorful? Check. Bold? Check. Stand out in the crowd? Check. Motivationally positive? Check. Check.I plucked the book out from amongst books that were either in business suits or golf shoes and headed to the couch with my notebook and pen (taken from the husband’s desk…just call me Sticky Fingers). He points out that Attitude Busters have two elements: Things and People. These elements will, as the book points out, either “…bust you or build you based on the way you react to them.”Page 76 is one of the most powerful pages of the entire book, as it gives a list of “Positive things and YES! things that BUST attitude busters.” At first I was aghast that Starbucks and shopping weren’t listed, until I saw, “Something that you do with passion” and “Anything inspirational” – yeah, that’s them. It’s a great list of things that can turn your attitude, mood, day and life around – which, if you ask me, makes it a list worth making copies of and placing randomly throughout your house.
